ymposium IV

Class Schedule

Whereby may we better measure the worthe of a gentlemanne or ladye than by grace and skille at dansynge? We entreate ye to considere thus: withe whiche arte are all the nobilitye most wont to diverte themselves? It is true that they will hunt, and reade; but these only hold in some cases, whereas one scarce findeth a noble who danseth not. Let us furthermore inquire what one may neede for these diverting entreprises: he who woulde reade needeth a booke, if he neede not a whole librarye at his disposalle to sate his desyre for learning; he who would hunt hath neede of houndes and hourses, and beyonde these meanes withe which he might slay his quarrye.

But he who would danse hath no such needes; the danser needeth but goode companye and musicke, and from time to time not needynge even these, he might danse alone to musicke imagined. For this raison, we may notice that everye ordere of societye, even the most simple peasantrye, do danse; but this pleasure is stille most propere to those who are noble; for with richesse and all sorte of thynges at their disposalle, they evidentely choose dansynge as that most worthye of pursuite.

Therefore, is it playne that we myghte distinguishe worthyenesse from excellence at that entreprise which is most propere to him who undertake it, and that therefore, we myghte distinguishe a gentlemanne by how welle he danse, and likewise a noble ladye? An this be so, for methinks it be, the education which were most desireable for the noble were that of dansynge. To the ende, therefore, of establyshynge upon ground more firme the true essence of nobilitye, we entreate ye most cordiallye to joinne us at the fourth Atlantian Danse Symposium, to be helde on the nine-teenth of Aprille in the Shyre of Isenfir. Here we propose to instructe alle, bothe the learned and the unlearned, in the arte of the danse, and to come together to diverte ourselves in this most noble of entreprises.
