Minutes of August 2001 Populace Meeting
August 28, 2001

The meeting was held in the Rinehart Building at 1110 Rose Hill Dr (Christine
Cooper's office). Debbie Jo called the meeting to order at 7:30pm. There
were 16 people in attendance.
Officers' Reports
- Seneschale - nothing major to report, but it was decided during
her report that beginning in September, Populace Meetings will be held
at David and Karen's home, in order to allow both to attend, as well
as be child-friendly for others with kids. It will still be the 4th
Tuesday at 7:30pm. Other options, including returning to Parker &
DeStefano and moving the meeting to Monday or Wednesday and going to
New Cabell Hall were also considered and rejected due to scheduling
conflicts or lack of child-friendliness.
- Castellan -
- Had a lot of contacts prior to Pennsic that still need to be followed
up on.
- The Student Activities Fair took place that afternoon at UVa,
and Gavin collected 56 names of interested folks. To follow up on
that, there will be a Newcomer Orientation/Demo in the New Dorms
area on Sunday, September 9th, in lieu of fighter practice. Gavin
will coordinate, and it will likely start around 3pm.
- Connie Lawson (Harrisonburg) is the new deputy Chatelaine for
the western part of the Shire.
- Gavin Lawson is coordinating a demo in conjunction with the International
Festival in Harrisonburg, to be held September 29th.
- David reported that Karen looked into what we could do with the
Albemarle County Fair. We could have a table that would have to
be manned for the duration of the Fair, or we could possibly set
up an encampment for the weekend. After some discussion, it was
agreed we would like to try to arrange an encampment for next year's
Fair. To do that, we must prepare a presentation for the Fair's
board of directors, to be presented in January, to propose what
we'd like to do. Anne volunteered to take charge of preparing the
presentation. The presentation should consist of who we are, what
we intend to do, how we're going to have the camp set up, and what
we're going to present to the public. We need to contact the board
no later than late November to get on the agenda for their January
meeting.
- Exchequer - wants receipts for Pennsic-related expenses. The
Pennsic trailer is back, so no more storage fees will be incurred. We
have $886.12 in the bank at the moment. New forms and a new handbook
are coming from Kingdom.
- Minister of Arts and Sciences (MoAS) - we didn't do much in
August, between Pennsic preparations and Pennsic. Starting in September,
Fiber Arts will be at Anne's house. People should remind her to clean
up her house beforehand (her request). Topic for September will be period
wool dyeing. Handcrafters remains at David and Karen's, and will focus
on shoes. Someone may try to bribe Baron Silver to come down, with a
promise of dinner at Tastings. Leather and Lace meetings will continue
in Waynesboro, with activities mirroring Fiber Arts and Handcrafters.
Anne will be beginning a series of Sunday morning garb workshops at
her place, focusing on 14th C. garb.
- Polyphony - absent, no report.
- Dance Master -
- Dance will be resuming September 5th. David proposed a format
change - first half will be social dance, second half will be more
formal class, with focus on learning more complex dances and improving
style and appearance. It was agreed that more in-depth dance training
would be useful, and we'd give this format a try.
- David wants to see more more props - swords and gloves for men,
fans, gloves, and handkerchiefs for ladies. He encourages ladies
to wear long, loose skirts when possible. All to help people get
more of a feel for "proper" dancing form.
- Lady Katherine Mercer (Ponte Alto - originally from Cynnabar)
will guest-teach some 16th C. Italian dances sometime in the next
couple of months.
- We scheduled a fall dance revel for Oct. 18th - Thursday dance
practice - in garb. Probably at Camp Albemarle.
- David wanted to schedule an end-of-year dance revel. He proposed
Dec. 8th - Saturday evening, and to schedule it as an event. Also
suggested were Sunday, Dec. 2nd, and Saturday, Dec. 1st (same day
as Unevent). David will look into site availability.
- Chronicler - home taking care of the kids, but sent her report
with David. She would like to put out a directory by the end of September,
so people should verify their information in the online directory and
send any updates to her at karen@oakhaven.org.
If anyone has any pictures to contribute to the Shire scrapbook, get
them to her (Debbie commented that John Bozeman has lots of pictures
to contribute).
- Webminister - UVa seems to have shut down site, so we have
moved to LinuxWebHost.com. The site up and running there. David registered
isenfir.org as the domain name, so the new URL for the site is www.isenfir.org.
He also requested to get a redirect for isenfir.atlantia.sca.org from
the Kingdom Webminister - will update other links pointing to Isenfir's
site once that name is confirmed (Kingdom link has already been requested
to be changed). The costs for the new changes are: Domain name = $20/yr,
hosting = $9.95/mo. Greg has offered free space - comparable available
functionality, less ease-of-use. It was decided to continue at the paid
site for three months, then reevaluate the use of a paid site.
- Herald - absent.
- Heavy Weapons Marshal - there will be a female fighter at the
Harrisonburg demo. Regular practices resume on September 9th (newcomer
orientation at UVa, then at Scott's home September 16th onward).
- Rapier Marshal - absent. Gavin reports he hasn't seen hide
nor hair of any rapier folks, but hopes to soon.
- Archer Marshal - the Shire has lots of new targets. Toby will
be trying to set up some additional types of shoots. He doesn't think
we have room to do a clout shoot, however. Suggestion to use Scott Stadium
at UVa for firing arrows ballistically high into the air was briefly
considered, then rejected.
- Thrown Weapons Marshal - absent.
Old Business
- Academy of the Rapier is on hold. Debbie will talk to Greg Glewwe
about it.
- Games Tourney is still in limbo.
- Pennsic was great! Cheers all around to Toby for his great work this
year. We'll have a 30-gallon water heater next year.
New Business
- Toby will check the papers to be sure contact information for listed
activities is correct.
- Toby will look into gift-wrapping at Barnes and Noble for Christmastime.
- Recruitment activities were discussed. It was agreed that Toby would
organize a "recruitment committee" to coordinate recruitment
activities. Possibilities for demos were discussed. Suggestions were
the Fall Fiber Festival in October (Anne will investigate), something
in conjunction with the Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton
(Toby will investigate), something in conjunction with the City Market
downtown during the Holidays, and Teri is still trying to coordinate
something at Piedmont Virginia Community College.
