Minutes of July 1999 Populace Meeting

July 28, 1999

Populace met at Rosecroft about 7:30.

Old Business

• Toby told every one the Isenfir camp at Pennsic will be at E19, right next to Vlad's Pleasure Palace. Says we will have anywhere from six to about twenty Isenfiri at any time.
• Trishka reports the demo on the Downtown Mall went well. The shopowner of KMH Hightower has invited us back anytime. We're looking at a date in September.
• Toby is going to do the flyers for the Student Activities Fair and the Triangle Demo.
• Dosso has ordered the coin dies, can pick them up next week, says he thinks he has a punch of the right size to cut coin blanks from sheet stock.
• Our Dance Master says he has a tentative dance schedule for the Revels at the Inns of Court in February 2000, and the Red Mountain Inn has been invited.
• Still working at a site for Nothing But Dance for November, but the group has agreed that the Unitarian Church on Rugby Road will work well.  Gio is attempting to determine availability and cost.  Another possibility brought up by Anne is Westminster Presbyterian Church, also on Rugby.  It is under renovation, but should be complete by mid-to-late August.
• Urien will check into the opinion of the baron of Black Diamond about a War over Afton Mt.
• Our Seneschale says she will probably need to rewrite award recommendation letters for the next reign, since they have not been acted on and she is uncertain if they will carry over into the next reign. Will look into it.
• The Pennsic gift basket for the Principality of the Mist must be delivered Wednesday morning of war week, (Aug 18th). Debbie Jo will be going up about then and can take the basket with her.

Officers' Reports

• Web Minister - (and crew) will be working to get the website updated and current prior to the Fall recruiting period.
• Chronicler - the usual plea for submissions, and assurances that she has sent in her quarterly report.
• Dance Master Extraordinare - reported that attendance has been outstanding, and the Shire continues to prepare for the dances at Coronation.  He is still searching for a site for practice during the school year, someplace close enough our students can walk, but off Grounds.  Baptist Student Union and Unitarian Church cited as possible sites.  Gio said he'd look into the Unitarian Church.  Debbie Jo is exploring the possibility of using the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church across from the Newcomb Parking Garage.
• Deputy Rapier Marshal -  the Shire has seven authorized and one about to be (John will play his prize at Coronation).  He suggests the Shire come one Sunday a month in garb when practice moves back to the Triangle, to get more exposure for SCA (this was agreed to by the group quite strongly). Also, we need a Heavy Marshal, and Urien says when he can get to the class at University he will take it and do his apprenticeship.
• Exchequer - sent in his quarterly report, says the content of the coffers has changed about a hundred and forty dollars after paying Chronicler for nine or ten month's printing and stamps.
• Minister of Arts and Sciences - deputy, at least, asked about interest in archery. Many of us are still interested, and when weather cools a bit, we will move toward setting up a butts. Urien reminds us Caer Mear is having fairly regular archery practices, and we are welcome to attend. Trishka says she hopes to preplan Handcrafters after Pennsic.
• Herald - says he submitted his quarterly report.
• Castellan - reports we may have an exile from Ponte Alto joining us. The video on Public Access is on hold until after Pennsic. He approved, heartily, a suggestion to set up a Fall Recruitment Committee. It will consist of Toby, Aimee, Anne, Trishka, Teri, Karen, David, and Debbie Jo, and will have its first meeting on either the 1st or 2nd of August, depending on Trishka and Debbie Jo's schedules.

David recommended strongly that the Shire make a concerted effort at recruiting this fall and that we plan and organize a strategy for getting and keeping people, as opposed to previous years where Activity Fairs and Demos have been pointless and disorganized.   To that end, he put forward a tentative fall schedule on the Isenet prior to the meeting.  It was discussed point by point at the meeting, no one seemed to have any problems with it, and it was adopted.  [See calendar below]

Event of the Month for August will be Pennsic. For September, Coronation (Sep 10-12).   Rumors abound of a Pennsic Pity Party at Gio and Donna's housesitting, hot tub-equipped location.  Date TBA.
